To celebrate Upper Canada Mall’s 50th, we’re taking a trip down memory lane with some never-before-seen archival photos of the shopping centre. Since opening our doors on May 1, 1974, we’ve witnessed the transformation of both our community and the shopping experience offered. Join us for a nostalgic journey back to the early days of UCM and see how the centre has continued to evolve over the years.

1970s
On May 1, 1974, Upper Canada opened its doors with a grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony and welcomed 55 stores including Simpsons-Sears & Zellers. The mall created 700 jobs for locals. At the time, Newmarket’s population was a modest 22,000.
1980s
Upper Canada’s first expansion was kicked off with a Sod Turning Ceremony. This expansion included 169,000 feet of retail space added and a food court with Phase 1 opening in 1989.
1990s
The late 80’s and early 90’s saw a significant period of expansion. Phase 2 opened in March 1990, adding another 170,000 square feet, bringing Upper Canada to over 800,000 square feet. This expansion created over 1000 full and part time jobs for locals. It also saw the opening of the infamous food court play park! Other notable arrivals in the 90’s included an Eatons department store.
2000s
A new play park was introduced in 2005. Made of foam, it was one of the safest in Canada! Along with the new play park came Marty the Mall Moose – Upper Canada’s mascot. In 2007, Upper Canada expanded by another 100,000 square feet and welcomed dominant fashion retailers H&M, Sport Chek, lululemon athletica, and Sephora.
2010s
The 2010s saw immense growth for Upper Canada. In 2017, redevelopment plans for the former Target location were announced. The redevelopment included the introduction of a one-level, 64,000 sq. ft. Sport Chek location, a 40,000 sq. ft. first-to-market Food Market concept, a new two-level feature court space and a 35,000 sq. ft. vertical expansion. Market & Co. opened on September 7, 2018 and offered guests diverse culinary experience with a mix of food vendors and eateries, including full-service restaurants.
Today
Today, Upper Canada is a vibrant, community hub offering guests the best in fashion, food and lifestyle brands. Now at over 1,000,000 square feet – we are just getting started!
